Talk about an intense roller coaster that ups the stakes with each subsequent character action. Having said that, the cliffside RV set piece is one of the finest scenes Spielberg has ever filmed. I'm a Spielberg defender, but this is one of only a couple of his films that never resonated with me. Also the blend of CGI and puppetry wasn't nearly as good as its predecessor four years earlier. The film tried to go for a darker "Temple of Doom" tone and it never really landed. I don't know if there were any behind-the-scenes issues but this film had a weird lethargic energy to it, almost like Spielberg was creatively hungover after delivering knock out after knock out during the eighties and nineties. It wasn't until I re-watched it with my brother that I realised after all these years that this film completely rips off "King Kong." Except it's not as interesting thematically and the characters are pretty boring (outside of the returning faces). Growing up there was something about this film that rubbed me the wrong way.
